How do I talk down a car dealer for a used car?
first off, I'm not trying to screw anyone, I'm just trying to not get screwed myself. I'm looking at a 1999 mercury sable, 75,000 miles, fully loaded, dealer claims it's in excellent condition (haven't seen it yet but I've dealt with this dealer before and they're pretty good so it's probably true) they're asking 6990 but I've done my homework and this car should be in the 4-6 grand range. Edmunds.com car appraiser shows 5058 for dealer retail for this car. so how do I deal with this situation? I'm willing to pay that much and even go a little higher if it's in great condition (plus the dealership usually goes over every car with a fine tooth comb and do some general tune-up work before selling). I just feel that 6990 is way too high. ok I just remembered to do an appraisal on kelly blue book which has a few more options for the car. it came up to 6100. this is still almost 1000 less than the asking price. the edmund's estimate was with every option selected and outstanding condition but cd changer wasn't an option which would have raised the price some but not by 1000. anyway opinions? well I was actually looking for a toyota and it's at a toyota dealership. unfortunately all I've been able to find in my price range is like three different mercury sables at different dealerships. normally I'd just wait until there was something better but it would be best to do it before I go back to school in about 3 weeks
